Signals are dispatches: shorter, faster, and written in a different register from the essays. They appear as technical primers, historical analyses, legal annotations, open-source intelligence readings, and occasional long-form interviews. A Signal is typically two to four thousand words — long enough to make a real argument, short enough to be read in a single sitting without rearranging a working day. The Signals track covers things the editors think a serious reader of this field should know about — developments that have not yet generated the volume of commentary that would make them mainstream, technologies that are moving through readiness levels faster than the policy literature has caught up with, historical cases that illuminate present dynamics in ways that are underappreciated. Every Signal that makes a technology claim carries an explicit Technology Readiness Level assessment, so readers know precisely where on the spectrum from laboratory curiosity to fielded capability any given development sits. The word "signal" is used deliberately. These pieces are not conclusions — they are observations worth tracking, arguments worth examining, patterns worth holding in mind as the larger picture develops. Where a Signal is necessarily speculative, it says so. The editors believe that honest speculation, clearly labelled, is more useful than false confidence, and that readers who work in this field are well equipped to judge the difference.
